Zach Hyman records seventh career NHL hat trick

Edmonton Oilers left winger Zach Hyman of Toronto, Ontario recorded his seventh career National Hockey League hat trick. He accomplished the feat on Thursday in a 4-1 Oilers win over the Detroit Red Wings at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Ontario.

Hyman opened the scoring with five minutes and 35 seconds left in the first period from Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario and Leon Draisaitl on the power play. Hyman then put the Oilers up 3-1 from McDavid and defenseman Darnell Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario with two minutes and 12 seconds left in the second period. Hyman then scored from McDavid and Draisaitl into an empty net with one minute and 17 seconds left in the third period to close out the scoring.

It was also a strong game for McDavid. He had four assists.

All of Hyman’s hat tricks came with the Oilers. He accomplished the feat in a 6-3 Oilers win over the Nashville Predators on December 13, 2022, in a 4-1 Oilers win over the Seattle Kraken on November 11, 2023, in a 6-1 Oilers win over the Carolina Hurricanes on December 6, 2023, in a 3-1 Oilers win over the Ottawa Senators on January 6, 2024, in a 7-2 Oilers win over the Washington Capitals on March 13, 2024, and in a 7-4 Oilers win over the Los Angeles Kings on April 22, 2024.

In 12 games this season, Hyman has five goals and four assists for nine points. He is a +1 with eight penalty minutes, two power-play points, 30 shots on goal, one blocked shot, 26 hits, one takeaway, and two giveaways. The blocked shot and takeaway came in a 4-3 Oilers win over the Carolina Hurricanes on November 15. The first power-play point came on November 29 in a 4-0 Oilers win over the Seattle Kraken. Hyman put the Oilers up 3-0 from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Burnaby, British Columbia and Draisaitl with one minute and nine seconds left in the second period.

With the win, the Oilers improved to a record of 14 wins, 11 regulation losses and six losses in extra time for 34 points. They are in fourth place in the Pacific Division and seventh place in the Western Conference.
