Colorado Avalanche goaltender Scott Wedgewood of Brampton, Ontario recorded his ninth career National Hockey League shutout on Sunday. He accomplished the feat in a 1-0 Avalanche win over the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Wedgewood made 22 saves for the shutout. He made 11 saves in the first period, only one save in the second period, and 10 saves in the third period. Ryan Greene of Paradise, Newfoundland and Ryan Donato led the Blackhawks with four shots on goal each.
The lone Avalanche goal scorer was defenseman Cale Makar of Calgary, Alberta. The former Calder Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy, and Norris Trophy winner scored from Tristen Nielsen of Fort St. John, British Columbia with one minute and 39 seconds left in the second period. For Nielsen, it was his first ever NHL point. Undrafted, Nielsen signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Avalanche on October 27.
Of Wedgewood’s nine NHL shutouts, three shutouts have been with the Avalanche, three have been with the New Jersey Devils, two have been with the Dallas Stars, and one with the Arizona Coyotes. It has been a spectacular season for Wedgewood. He has a record of 13 wins, one regulation loss, and two losses in extra time with a goals against average of 2.09, and a save percentage of .918. Wedgewood’s 13 NHL wins leads the NHL.
Colorado improved to a record of 16-1-5. They have 37 points and have the most points in the NHL.
