Saint John, New Brunswick will host the 2027 World Men’s Curling Championship according to Melanie Price of CTV News. This will be the second time that Saint John will have hosted the World Men’s Curling Championship. They previously hosted the tournament in 1999. The tournament will take place at Toronto Dominion Station, home of the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.

During the 1999 World Men’s Curling Championships, Canada won the silver medal as Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg, Manitoba lost the gold medal game to Hammy McMillan of Scotland by a score of 6-5. The championship final went to 11 ends. It was only Stoughton’s second loss during the entire 1999 World Men’s Curling Championship as he previously lost to Germany’s Andy Kapp 9-4 in the round robin.

This will be the fourth time that New Brunswick is hosting the World Men’s Curling Championship. Moncton was the host in 1980 and 2009. In 1980, the tournament was called the Air Canada Silver Broom. The world champions in 1980 were Canada’s Rick Folk of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In the final, Folk defeated Kristian Sorum 7-6. The year 1980 was also the last year Saskatchewan won the Brier. Then in 2009, Scotland’s David Murdoch defeated Canada’s Kevin Martin 7-6 in the final. This match is best remembered in the curling world by Martin throwing his second last stone away, believing Murdoch had no shot. Murdoch did have a shot and stole the winning point.

Twice before Saint John has hosted the Women’s World Curling Championship. In 1999, the champions were Sweden’s Elisabet Gustafson. In 2014, Binia Feltscher of Switzerland won gold, with Canada’s Rachel Homan of Ottawa, Ontario winning silver.
