Canadian Olympic gold medalist Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario won the gold medal on Thursday in the women’s 200 metre butterfly at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. This was McIntosh’s third gold medal at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships, as she previously placed first in the women’s 400 metre freestyle and women’s 200 metre individual medley.

In Thursday’s race, McIntosh had a first place time of 2:01.99. Regan Smith of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 2:04.99. Elizabeth Dekkers of Australia won the bronze medal with a time of 2:06.12. McIntosh reached the podium by 4.44 seconds. Twelve-year-old sensation Zidi Yu of China finished in fourth place with a time of 2:06.43.

McIntosh’s time was 0.18 seconds back of the world record time of 2:01.81 set by Zige Liu of China at the 2009 Chinese National Games. McIntosh’s time of 2:01.99 is the second fastest time in women’s 200 metre butterfly history.

The goal for McIntosh this week in Singapore is to win five gold medals. She is 60% from achieving that goal. McIntosh still has the women’s 800 metres on Saturday and the women’s 400 metre individual medley on Sunday.

At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, McIntosh won gold in the women’s 200 metre butterfly, women’s 200 metre individual medley and the women’s 400 metre individual medley. The Thursday gold medal in the women’s 200 metre butterfly will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
