Justin Sourdif records first career NHL hat trick

Washington Capitals right winger Justin Sourdif of Richmond, British Columbia recorded his first National Hockey League hat trick on Monday. He accomplished the feat in a 7-4 Capitals win over the Anaheim Ducks at the Capital One Arena in Washington, District of Columbia.

Sourdif not only had a career night in goals, but points too as he had five points. Sourdif had two assists in the game as he set up Ryan Leonard and Alexander Ovechkin.

Sourdif’s first goal of the game came at 15:56 of the first period to tie the game at one. Connor McMichael of Ajax, Ontario and defenseman Matt Roy had the assists. Sourdif then scored from McMichael with one minute and two seconds left in the first period to put the Capitals up 2-1. Sourdif’s hat trick came at 7:30 of the second period from Leonard and McMichael to put the Capitals up 4-1. It was also a career game for McMichael as he had a career-high in assists (three) and points (four).

In 2025-26, Sourdif has eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points in 42 games. He was a +14 with 17 penalty minutes, one power-play point, 55 shots on goal, 168 shots on goal, 18 blocked shots, 53 hits, eight takeaways, and 23 giveaways. The power-play point was a power-play goal and came on New Year’s Eve in a 6-3 Capitals win over the New York Rangers. Sourdif scored from Alexander Ovechkin at 11:12 of the second period and put the Capitals up 3-1.

With the win, the Capitals improved to a record of 22 wins, 15 regulation losses and six losses in extra time for 50 points. They are tied with the New York Islanders for second place in the Metropolitan Division.
