The 2025 World Gymnastics Championships completed on Saturday in Jakarta, Indonesia. Canada came away with one silver medal during the biggest international gymnastics competition in the world this year. In the women’s vault on Friday, 16-year-old Lia Monica Fontaine of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec placed second.
Fontaine had a score of 14.033 points. Angelina Melnikova of Kazakhstan won the gold medal with a score of 14.466 points. Joscelyn Roberson of the United States won the bronze medal with a score of 13.983. Fontaine reached the podium by 0.167 points over Lisa Vaelen of Belgium. Vaelen had a fourth place score of 13.866 points.
Fontaine’s greatest accomplishment to date was winning the gold medal in the women’s floor exercise at the 2025 Pan American Championships in Panama City, Panama. It was one of five medals Fontaine won at the Pan American Championships. She also won silver in the women’s team, women’s vault, and women’s all-around, and bronze in the women’s uneven bars.
Team Canada did not win a medal at the 2023 World Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp. Canada’s last World Championship medal in gymnastics came in Liverpool, England in 2022 as Ellie Black of Halifax, Nova Scotia won bronze in the balance beam. The World Championship silver medal will give Fontaine confidence as she prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
