Laurent Dubreuil of Quebec City, Quebec has won Canada’s eighth medal at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo. On Saturday, Dubreuil won a bronze medal in the men’s 500 metres.

This was Dubreuil’s second Olympic medal. He won a silver medal in the men’s 1000 metres at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

Dubreuil had a time of 34.26 seconds. Jordan Stolz of the United States won the gold medal with a time of 33.77 seconds. Jenning de Boo of the Netherlands had a second place time of 33.88 seconds. Dubreuil reached the podium by nine one-hundredths of a second. Damian Zurek of Poland finished in fourth place with a time of 34:35.

The bronze medal was unexpected for Dubreuil. That is because Dubreuil finished 15th in the World Cup standings in the men’s 500 metres, and did not have one World Cup medal this season in eight races. His best result was a sixth place finish in a World Cup in Heerenveen, Netherlands on December 5.

When Dubreuil competed at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, he was the heavy favourite to win the gold medal in the men’s 500 metres. Shockingly, he finished in fourth place with a time of 34.52. Dubreuil’s time of 34.26 on Saturday  would have won him the Olympic gold medal in 2022. Canada now has three silver medals and five bronze medals.
