Cubs acquire Michael Soroka in trade with Nationals

The Chicago Cubs have acquired starting pitcher Michael Soroka of Calgary, Alberta in a trade with the Washington Nationals on Wednesday. According to Mark Polishuk of MLB Trade Rumors, minor league infielder Ronny Cruz and minor league outfielder Christian Franklin are being traded from Chicago to Washington.

Soroka is joining his fourth Major League Baseball team. He was with the Atlanta Braves from 2018 to 2023, the Chicago White Sox in 2024 and the Nationals in 2025.

During 16 games this season for the Nationals, Soroka has a record of three wins and eight losses with an earned run average of 4.87. In 81 1/3 innings pitched, he gave up 68 hits, 44 earned runs, 11 home runs and 24 walks, to go along with 87 strikeouts, four quality starts, and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.13.

In 2019 while with the Braves, Soroka was a National League All-Star. In 29 games, he had a record of 13 wins and four losses with an earned run average of 2.68. In 174 2/3 innings pitched, Soroka gave up 153 hits, 52 earned runs, 14 home runs and 41 walks, to go along with 142 strikeouts, 19 quality starts, and a WHIP of 1.11.

The Cubs are in second place in the National League Central with a record of 63 wins and 45 losses. They are one game back of the first place Milwaukee Brewers.
