CFL makes significant rule changes starting in 2026

The Canadian Football League is making some significant rule changes starting in 2026. Next year, we will see a modified rouge, 35 second game clock rather than a 20 second game clock, and benches on opposite sides of the field in all stadiums. Then in 2027, the football fields will be changed from 110 yards to 100 yards, end zone size will drop from 20 yards to 15 yards, and the goal posts will be at the back of the end zone rather than the goal line.

So, what is the modified rouge. As of now, if a football goes through the end zone on a kickoff, punt or missed field goal, the team that kicked the ball gets a single point. As of next year, a single point from those scenarios will no longer exist. However, the rouge will continue. If a team misses a field goal, kicks the ball into the end zone from a kickoff or punt and is not returned by the opposition, then the rouge or single point will continue.

I understand the change of location of goal posts. One reason for the move here is player safety. However, I do not support football fields being dropped to 100 yards. Fields of 110 yards are distinctly Canadian. I still remember the great Brian Hall getting excited when anyone ran past the 55 yard line.

The rule changes did not come with praise from everyone. BC Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke was an opponent, and did not like the fact that players, coaches and management were not consulted according to Rogers Sportsnet.
