The Cape Breton Eagles are alive in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League playoffs. On Friday, they were victorious in a marathon contest. The Eagles defeated the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 3-2 in the fifth overtime on a game-winning goal by Angelo Fullerton of Quispasmis, New Brunswick.

With the win, the Eagles won their second game of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series. The Drakkar still lead the best out of seven series three games to two.

Fullerton’s goal came at 1:42 of the fifth overtime. Tomas Lavoie of Repentigny, Quebec had the lone assist. Another star player for the Eagles was goaltender Jakub Milota, who made 84 saves.

As mentioned in the headline, this is the second longest QMJHL game of all-time. The longest took place on March 19, 1999, as the Hull Olympiques defeated the Victoriaville Tigers 3-2 in game three of the first round of the 1999 QMJHL playoffs. Hull won the game at 6:31 of the fifth overtime on a goal by Brock Boucher of Orleans, Ontario.

The winner of the Drakkar/Eagles series will play the Moncton Wildcats. Six of the eight conference quarterfinals have already been determined. Other teams that have advanced to the second round are Rimouski Oceanic, the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, Shawinigan Cataractes and the Sherbrooke Phoenix.
