Team Canada has won their first game in women’s hockey at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo. On Saturday at the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena, Canada trounced Switzerland 4-0 thanks to a shutout by Canadian Olympic gold medalist Emerance Maschmeyer of Bruderheim, Alberta.

Maschmeyer, who won a gold medal for Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, has now had two Olympic shutouts. Four years ago in China, Maschmeyer made 11 saves in a 11-0 Canada quarterfinal win over Sweden.

In Canada’s win over Switzerland on Saturday, Maschmeyer was not very busy at all as Switzerland only had six shots. Maschmeyer made two saves in the first period,  ne save in the second period, and three saves in the third period.  Switzerland actually had a glorious chance to open the scoring in the first period as they went on a two-on-one, but shot wide. Canada, meanwhile, pressured the Swiss net with 55 shots on goal.

The four Canadian goal scorers were Julia Gosling of London, Ontario, Daryl Watts of Toronto, Ontario, and Canadian Olympic gold medalists Natalie Spooner of Scarborough, Ontario, and Sarah Fillier of Georgetown, Ontario. Spooner won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, and teamed up with Fillier to win Olympic gold in Beijing. Canada next plays the Czech Republic at 1pm on Monday.
