Canada trounces Japan in quarters at Women’s Hockey Worlds

Team Canada is in the semifinals of the 2025 Women’s World Hockey Championships in Ceske Budejovice, Czechia. On Thursday, Canada trounced Japan 9-1 in the fourth quarterfinal game.

Six Canadians had a multi-point game. Canadian Olympic gold medalist Claire Thompson of Toronto, Ontario had one goal and two assists for three points, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Renata Fast of Hamilton, Ontario had three assists, Jennifer Gardiner of Surrey, British Columbia and Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sarah Fillier of Georgetown, Ontario had two goals each, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Emily Clark of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan had 0ne goal and one assist for two points, and Kristin O’Neill of Oakville, Ontario had two assists. The other three Canadian goal scorers were Julia Gosling of London, Ontario, Sophie Jaques of Toronto, and Canadian Olympic gold medalist Ella Shelton of Ingersoll, Ontario. Thompson, Fast, Fillier, Clark and Shelton won a gold medal for Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

Next up for Team Canada in the semifinals on Saturday is Finland. On Thursday in the quarterfinals, Finland defeated Sweden 3-2. Meanwhile, the United States will play Czechia in the other semifinal. In the other two quarterfinal games, the United States beat Germany 3-0 and Czechia trounced Switzerland 7-0.
