The 2025 Calgary Stampede has a new event this year. For the first time ladies’s breakaway roping is taking place. For those unaware what breakaway roping is, it is when a calf is roped, but not thrown to the ground and tied. On Friday, in the first day this event has ever taken place at the Calgary Stampede, Shelby Boisjoli-Meged of Langdon, Alberta posted the fastest time of 2.3 seconds.
Boisjoli-Meged was half a second faster than Kinlie Brennise of Craig, Colorado, who finished in second place with a time of 2.8 seconds. A second Canadian reached the top three as Jenna Dallyn of Nanton, Alberta was in third place with a time of 2.9 seconds.
Meanwhile in tie-down roping, Kyle Lucas of Carstairs, Alberta had a second place time of 7.3 seconds. Lucas was tied with John Douch of Huntsville, Texas. The fastest tie-down roper on Friday was Riley Pruitt of Gering, Nebraska, who had a time of 7.1 seconds. A second Canadian cowboy is in second place. In the steer wrestling, Scott Guenther of Provost, Alberta had a second place time of 4.4 seconds. He was a tenth of a second slower than Kyle Irwin of Robertsdale, Florida, who had a time of 4.3 seconds.
In the Rangeland Derby, Chad Fike of Cremona, Alberta had the fastest time on the opening night of the world’s most famous 10-day chuckwagon race on Friday. He began the 2025 Calgary Stampede with a time of 1:11.73.
