Canadian Olympic silver medalist Marco Arop of Edmonton, Alberta won the bronze medal on Saturday in the men’s 800 metres at the 2025 International Association of Athletics Federations World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan. This was Canada’s fourth medal at the championships as Team Canada previously won three gold medals.

Arop had a third place time on Saturday of 1:41.95. Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya, won the gold medal with a time of 1:41.86. Djamel Sedjati of Algeria won the silver medal with a time of 1:41.90. Arop reached the podium by two tenths of a second. Cian McPhillips of Ireland finished in fourth place with an Irish national record time of 1:42.15.

This was Arop’s third career medal at the IAAF World Athletics Championships. He previously won the gold medal in Budapest in 2023, and the silver medal in Eugene in 2022. Canada’s other three medals (all gold) in the 2025 World Athletics Championships came from Evan Dunfee of Richmond, British Columbia (men’s 35 kilometre walk), Camryn Rogers of Richmond (women’s hammer throw), and Ethan Katzberg of Nanaimo, British Columbia (men’s hammer throw).

Arop’s Olympic silver medal came at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. His world championship bronze medal will give him confidence as he prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
