San Diego Padres starting pitcher Nick Pivetta of Victoria, British Columbia recorded his 59th Major League Baseball quality start on Tuesday. He accomplished the feat in a 2-0 Padres win over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan.
Pivetta threw seven shutout innings and only gave top two hits. He had six strikeouts and two walks. Pivetta faced 25 batters and had 91 pitches, of which 58 pitches were strikes.
Quite simply, Pivetta has had an unbelievable start to his 2025 Major League Baseball season, his first with the Padres. He improved to a record of four wins and one loss with an earned run average of 1.20. During 30 innings, Pivetta gave up 16 hits, four earned runs, seven walks, and one home run, to go along with 30 strikeouts and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 0.77.
Pivetta leads Major League Baseball with four wins and the National League with a 0.77 WHIP. Other players with four victories are Max Fried of the New York Yankees and Brandon Pfaadt of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Of Pivetta’s 59 quality starts, 36 have come with the Boston Red Sox, 19 have come with the Philadelphia Phillies, and now four with the Padres.
With the win, the Padres improved to a record of 17 wins and seven losses and lead the National League West. They are involved in a hotly contested division that includes the 16-8 Los Angeles Dodgers, 15-9 San Francisco Giants and 14-9 Arizona Diamondbacks.
