Canada wins bronze in Women’s Rugby Sevens Singapore

For the second straight week, Team Canada has won a bronze medal in a Women’s Rugby Sevens Series event. After finishing in third place a week ago in Hong Kong, the Canadians won the bronze medal in Singapore on Sunday.

Team Canada won the bronze medal match 21-5 over France. Team Canada won both Pool C matches by beating Great Britain 14-5 and the United States 31-21 on Saturday. They then got spanked 45-7 by Australia in the semifinals. New Zealand won the gold medal and Australia won the silver medal.

In Canada’s win over Great Britain, Team Canada got tries from Canadian Olympic silver medalists Carissa Norsten of Waldheim, Saskatchewan and Olivia Apps of Toronto, Ontario. In Canada’s win over the United States, Team Canada got two tries from Canadian Olympic silver medalist Fancy Bermudez of Edmonton, Alberta. and one try from Breanne Nicholas of Chatham, Ontario, Sabrina Poulin of St-Georges de Beauce, Quebec, and Norsten. In Canada’s win over France, Canada got tries Bermudez, Norsten and Canadian Olympic silver medalist Shalaya Valenzuela of Abbotsford, British Columbia.

In the Women’s Rugby Sevens Series standings, Canada finished in fourth place with 72 points. They were behind New Zealand (116), Australia (106), and France (80).

Norsten, Apps, Valenzuela and Bermudez won a silver medal for Canada in women’s rugby sevens at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.  The bronze medal for Canada in Singapore will give Canada confidence as they prepare for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
