Team Canada wins four World Cup ski cross medals in Craigleith

Team Canada won four medals over the weekend during four World Cup ski cross competitions in Craigleith, Ontario. The Canadian team won two medals on Saturday, and two additional medals on Sunday.

In Saturday’s events, Jared Schmidt of Ottawa, Ontario won the silver medal on the men’s side, and Hannah Schmidt of Ottawa won the silver medal on the women’s side. In Sunday’s events, Kaleb Barnum of Calgary, Alberta won the silver medal and Kristofor Mahler of Canmore, Alberta won bronze on the men’s side.

In the men’s event on Saturday, Jared Schmidt placed behind gold medalist Youri Duplessis-Kergomard of France and ahead of bronze medalist David Mobaerg of Sweden. In the women’s event on Saturday, Hannah Schmidt placed behind gold medalist Fanny Smith of Switzerland and bronze medalist Jole Galli of Italy. In the men’s event on Sunday, Barnum and Mahler placed behind gold medalist Federico Tomasoni of Italy.

Jared Schmidt won the seventh elimination heat, first quarterfinal heat and first semifinal heat. Hannah Schmidt won the first quarterfinal heat and second semifinal heat. Barnum won the second elimination heat, finished second in the first quarterfinal heat behind Evan Klufts of France and second in the first elimination heat behind Mobaerg. Mahler won the seventh elimination heat and fourth quarterfinal heat, before finishing second to Federico Tomasoni of Italy in the second semifinal.

This was Jared Schmidt’s seventh World Cup of his career. He has won three gold medals, one silver medal, and three bronze medals. This was Hannah Schmidt’s 10th World Cup medal of her career. She has won four gold medals, two silver medals, and four bronze medals. This was Barnum’s first World Cup medal. This was Mahler’s fourth World Cup medal. He has won two gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal.

In the World Cup women’s ski cross standings, Hannah Schmidt is in seventh place with 505 points. Sarah Naeslund of Sweden leads with 1068 points. In the men’s ski cross standings, Jared Schmidt is in seventh place with 418 points, Mahler is in 19th place with 220 points and Barnum is in 30th place with 110 points. Canadian Reece Howden of Chilliwack, British Columbia won the men’s Crystal Globe with 901 points. The medals for Hannah Schmidt, Jared Schmidt, Mahler and Barnum will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2030 Olympic Winter Games in the French Alps.
