Canada is unbeaten in round robin in Paralympic wheelchair curling

Team Canada made history at the Paralympic Winter Games according to CBC Sports on Thursday. That is because they are the first team ever to go through the round robin portion of the Paralympic wheelchair curling tournament without a loss.

Team Canada defeated South Korea’s Hui-tae Yang 6-3 and Sean O’Neill of the United States on Thursday to finish the round robin portion of the Paralympic tournament with a perfect record of nine wins and zero losses. With the wins, Canada advanced to the semifinals where they will face South Korea on Friday. China will face Sweden in the other semifinal.

When Canada won the gold medal at the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games in Turin, they finished in first place in the pool with a record of five wins and two losses. The Canadian team was skipped by eventual Paralympic gold medalist Chris Daw of North York, Ontario. The Canadian losses came to Sweden and the United States by scores of 5-4.

In 2010, when Canada’s Jim Armstrong of Victoria, British Columbia won Paralympic gold, he led Canada to a first place finish int the round robin of seven wins and two losses. Canada lost in the round robin by scores of 8-7 Italy and 8-4 to Sweden.

In 2014, Russia was the top team in the round robin at the Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi. Their only round robin loss came to Canada’s Armstrong, the eventual Paralympic gold medalist, by a score of 5-4.

In 2018, South Korea, Canada and China tied for first after the round robin at nine wins and two losses. In 2022, China was first after the round robin at eight wins and two losses. In the round robin, Chiba was beaten 7-3 by Canada and 5-1 by Sweden.
