There is one Canadian left in the singles draws of the 2026 Australian Open in Melbourne. It is the 2025 National Bank Open champion, Victoria Mboko of Burlington, Ontario.
Mboko is the 17th seed in Melbourne in the women’s draw. In her first round match, she defeated Emerson Jones of Australia, 6-4, 6-1. In the second round, Mboko beat American Caty McNally, 6-4, 6-3.
Mboko broke Jones four times in 10 opportunities. Mboko also was serving exceptionally well as Jones did not have a break point chance. Mboko also only had two double faults, compared to five for Jones. Mboko won 67% of her second serve points, compared to 43% for Jones.
In Mboko’s win over McNally, Mboko broke McNally five times in 10 opportunities. Mboko also had fewer double faults (two) compared to McNally’s six. Mboko had the better second serve percentage. She won 64% of her second serve points, while McNally only won 35%.
Up next for Mboko is Denmark’s Clara Tauson, the 14th seed. This will be their first ever meeting head-to-head.
Mboko was one of two Canadians to win a singles match at the 2026 Australian Open. The other was Denis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario. Shapovalov beat Yunchaokete Bu of China 6-3, 7-6, 6-1 in the first round, but then was beaten 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 to Marin Cilic of Croatia in the second round.
