Nick Pivetta of Victoria, British Columbia is continuing his marvelous 2025 Major League Baseball season. On Tuesday, Pivetta recorded the 71st quality start of his Major League Baseball career as the San Diego Padres defeated the San Francisco Giants 5-1.

Pivetta threw six innings on Tuesday, and only gave up one earned run. He gave up three hits, two walks, and had 10 strikeouts. Pivetta threw 109 pitches of which 71 were strikes.

This was the third time this season that Pivetta had 10 strikeouts in a game. He accomplished the feat in an 8-0 Padres win over the Colorado Rockies on April 11, and in a 1-0 Padres win over the Washington Nationals on June 25.

This season, Pivetta has a record of 12 wins and four losses with an earned run average of 2.87. During 141 1/3 innings pitched, he has given up 98 hits, 45 earned runs, 15 home runs, and 36 walks, to go along with 144 strikeouts, and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 0.95.

Of Pivetta’s 71 quality starts, 16 have come this season with the Padres, his first in San Diego. That is the most quality starts he has had in a single season. Pivetta’s previous career high was 12 quality starts with the Boston Red Sox in 2022. Pivetta had 19 quality starts with the Philadelphia Phillies from 2017 to 2019, and 36 quality starts with the Red Sox from 2021 to 2024.

The Padres currently have a record of 70 wins and 56 losses. They are in second place in the National League West and two games back of the division leading Los Angeles Dodgers. San Diego also has the second best wildcard record and lead the Cincinnati Reds by three and a half games for a wildcard spot.
