Team Newfoundland has won its third medal as the host province at the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s. The medal came in swimming as Thomas Pelley of Paradise won the bronze medal in the men’s 50 metre freestyle swimming event for those athletes in the Special Olympics classification.
Pelley had a time of 28.52 seconds. He reached the podium by 0.97 seconds over Ramon Siytangco of Vancouver, British Columbia, who finished in fourth place with a time of 29.49 seconds. Lucas Landry of Jonquiere, Quebec won the gold medal with a time of 28.13 seconds. London Arbeau of Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia won the silver medal with a time of 28.39 seconds.
Speaking of Quebec and Nova Scotia, it has been a sensational Canada Games for these two provinces so far. Quebec leads the overall medal standings with 94, and Nova Scotia is a very surprising fourth place overall with 44 medals. Landry won one of seven gold medals for Quebec on Thursday. Five of the gold medals came in canoeing.
Of Nova Scotia’s 44 medals, 16 have been gold medals. Of Nova Scotia’s 16 gold medals, 14 have been in canoeing and two in swimming. Nova Scotia has had two athletes win multiple gold medals in individual events to date. They are Arbeau (men’s 50 metre and 100 metre backstroke in the Men’s Special Olympics classification), and canoer Anna Archibald of Dartmouth (women’s K1 500 metres and women’s K1 1000 metres). Overall, Archibald now has seven medals (four gold medals and three silver medals).
