Canada’s three smallest Maritime provinces earned medals on Tuesday at the 2025 Canada Games in St. John’s. Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island now have two medals, while New Brunswick earned their first medal.
Newfoundland’s second medal came in swimming. Thomas Pelley of Paradise won silver in the men’s 100 metre freestyle in the Special Olympics division. Pelley had a time of 1:03.09. Lukas Landry of Jonquiere, Quebec won the gold medal with a time of 1:01.86, and Landon Arbeau of Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia won the bronze medal with a time of 1:03.28.
New Brunswick’s medal also came in swimming. Zachary Newman of Bathurst won bronze in the men’s 50 metre breaststroke. Newman had a time of 30.36 seconds. Justin Leveillee of Drummondville, Quebec won the gold medal with a time of 28.96 seconds. Tazio Mastromatteo of Kenora, Ontario won the silver medal with a time of 29.04 seconds.
Prince Edward Island’s medal came in swimming too. Veronica MacLellan of Charlottetown won her second medal at the Canada Games as she won the bronze medal in the women’s 100 metre para backstroke. Alyssa Smith of Orangeville, Ontario won gold and Maxine Lavitt of Winnipeg, Manitoba won silver.
Ontario has taken over the lead in the medal standings as they have 40 medals. Quebec is second with 34 medals.
