According to Josh Erickson of Pro Hockey Rumors on Thursday, the Dallas Stars have traded Mathew Dumba of Regina, Saskatchewan to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In addition to Dumba, the Penguins received a second round pick in the 2028 National Hockey League Entry Draft. The Stars receive defenseman Vladislav Kolaychonok.

The Penguins will be Dumba’s fifth NHL team he has played for. He was previously with the Minnesota Wild for a decade from 2013 to 2023. Dumba was also with the Arizona Coyotes and Tampa Bay Lightning from 2023 to 2024, and the Stars from 2024 to 2025.

This past season for the Stars, Dumba had one goal and nine assists for 10 points in 63 games. He was a -5 with one power-play point, 57 shots on goal, 60 blocked shots, 70 hits, 16 takeaways, and 62 giveaways.

Dumba is in the second year of a $7.5 million contract. He is set to make $3.75 million this up coming season on a Penguins team known for its veteran defensemen. On their roster they have 38-year-old Kris Letang of Montreal, Quebec, 30-year-old Ryan Graves of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and former Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson, who is 35 years old. Dumba is 30 years old.

In 2019-20 while with the Wild, Dumba won the King Clancy Award, presented to the player with leadership qualities on and off the ice. For my feature story on Dumba for Calgary Hockey Magazine in 2017, please click here.
