Mboko upsets Magdalena Frech in the first round of Wimbledon

Victoria Mboko of Burlington, Ontario is in the second round of Wimbledon after a first round upset. Mboko, who is 97th in the world, beat a player ranked in the top 25 for the first time in her career on Tuesday, as she beat the 25th seed Magdalena Frech of Poland, 6-3, 6-2. Mboko broke Frech five times in 10 opportunities. Mboko was a lucky loser, as she qualified for Wimbledon when Anastasia Potapova of Russia withdrew due to an undisclosed injury.

In all, there are four Canadians in the second round of Wimbledon. Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec, the 29th seed, beat Hannah Klugman of Great Britain, 6-1, 6-3. Fernandez, the 2021 United States Open finalist, broke Klugman five times. Meanwhile, Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, the 25th seed, beat James Duckworth of Australia, 6-2, 3-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. Auger-Aliassime, the 2021 United States Open semifinalist, had 26 aces compared to eight for Duckworth. Gabriel Diallo of Montreal beat Daniel Altmaier of Germany, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. Diallo broke Altmaier six times.

Mboko will next face Hailey Baptiste of the United States for their first ever meeting. Fernandez will next face Laura Siegemund of Germany. They have never played against each other either.

Auger-Aliassime’s next opponent is Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany. Auger-Aliassime has won three of five meetings. Auger-Aliassime beat Struff 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the first round of Rotterdam in 2020, 7-6, 6-4 in the first round of the 2023 Paris Indoor, and 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open. Diallo will next face the fifth seed and 2024 United States Open finalist Taylor Fritz of the United States in their first ever meeting.
