The Edmonton Oilers have won game one of the 2025 Stanley Cup Finals from Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. On Wednesday, the Oilers defeated the Florida Panthers 4-3 on an overtime winner by Leon Draisaitl. The 2025 Rocket Richard Trophy winner scored the game-winning goal from Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario, and two-time Canadian Olympic gold medalist Corey Perry of Peterborough, Ontario. Perry won the gold medal for Canada in men’s ice hockey at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

McDavid led the Oilers in scoring with two points, as he had two assists. He also set up Mattias Ekholm for a highlight reel pass at 6:33 of the third period for the game-tying goal.

Meanwhile, Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner of Edmonton, Alberta, picked up the victory. He had a relatively shaky start, but was excellent in the second period, third period and overtime.

In a losing cause, Panthers forward Sam Bennett of Holland Landing, Ontario set the Florida franchise record for most goals in a single playoff with 12. He has one more goal that Carter Verhaeghe of Toronto, Ontario, who had 11 goals in 2023-24, and Matthew Tkachuk, who had 11 goals in 2022-23. Game two of the Stanley Cup Finals is in Edmonton on Friday.
